The stage is set in Wellington, New Zealand, for one of the most important lacrosse events in the Asia-Pacific region—the APLU World Cup Qualifiers 2026. From January 6–11, seven nations will battle for a chance to secure their spot at the 2027 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in Tokyo. For Australia, this tournament is more than a qualifier—it’s a statement of intent.
What’s at Stake
Japan, as host of the 2027 World Championship, is already qualified. That leaves three spots up for grabs among the remaining teams. For Australia, a perennial powerhouse in the region, the goal is clear: dominate Pool A and secure a direct path to the semifinals.
The Format
Pool A: Australia, Korea, New Zealand
Pool B: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines
Pool play runs from January 6–8, followed by play-in matches on January 9, semifinals on January 10, and the medal round on January 11, with the gold medal game scheduled for 3 p.m. NZT.
Australia’s Squad
Head Coach Glenn Morley has assembled a balanced roster blending experience and youth. Thirteen players return from the 2023 World Championship, joined by rising stars from the U20 team that finished third in Jeju, Korea. Expect a fast, physical, and disciplined approach—hallmarks of Australian lacrosse.
Key names to watch:
Hudson Robb – Left-handed attacker, U20 standout who scored the golden goal vs Haudenosaunee in Jeju.
Jordan Gillespie – Midfield sniper with a lightning-quick, laser-accurate shot.
Goalie Duo – Jae Bidwell Barton (biggest body in the tournament, commanding presence) and Kody Watts (shortest player, lightning reflexes).
Why This Tournament Matters
Beyond qualification, this event sets the tone for Tokyo 2027. Australia and Japan are widely regarded as the two strongest lacrosse nations outside North America. Their clash in Wellington could provide a psychological edge heading into the World Championship.
